Phillies, Braves Set For Showdown Part One

Six of the final 12 games of the season have been highlighted on the Phillies calendar for most of the year. The Phillies and Braves will be seeing a lot of each other over the next couple weeks and it all starts tonight in Philadelphia.

Both the Phillies and Braves had big wins on Sunday to set up their three-game series in Philadelphia. Atlanta got a grand slam from Derrek Lee to beat the Mets 6-3 Sunday, while the Phillies scored four ninth inning runs, with the big blow coming from Jayson Werth's two-run home run to the deepest part of the park, with the highest part of the fence to contend with.

Now, the two teams meet in Philadelphia with the Phillies holding a three-game lead in the division with both teams having 12 games to play. It's very possible that both clubs will wind up making the playoffs, with the Braves currently hanging onto a 2 1/2 game edge in the wild card standings.

The Phillies took advantage of an off-day to arrange their pitching rotation perfectly for the series. Cole Hamels (11-10, 3.01) goes Monday, Roy Halladay (19-10, 2.49) goes Tuesday and Roy Oswalt (7-1, 1.94 with the Phillies) finishes up the series on Wednesday.

Atlanta counters with Jair Jurrjens (7-6, 4.64), Mike Minor (3-1, 5.84 in seven starts) and Tommy Hanson (10-11, 3.62). The Braves have also summoned minor leaguer Brian Beachey to Philadelphia, due to concerns over Jurrjens knee and he would start Monday night's game if Jurrjens is unable to start. Beachey would be making his major league debut.
