At least the latest Phillies injury came at a fairly decent time. Catcher Brian Schneider lasted just long enough to allow starting catcher Carlos Diaz to come off the DL.

From Jimmy Rollins being scratched from the lineup before the home opener, and then missing the better part of two months, to Chase Utley missing seven weeks in the middle of the summer to Placido Polanco's bout with a pesky elbow injury, the 2010 Phillies were as injury-plagued as any team in baseball.

The trend has continued through the first six weeks of 2011.

With the Phillies trailing by a run in the fifth inning of Wednesday night's game in Florida, Brian Schneider appeared ready to tie the game, 1-1, but came up limping as he hit third base.

Schneider immediately left the game because of a left hamstring strain.

The Phillies were off Thursday, but Schneider expects to join a crowded list of players on the disabled list before the beginning of a three-game series in Atlanta this weekend.

"It's not good," Schneider said. "It definitely didn't feel good. Obviously if it felt good, I would have scored."

Schneider was in the starting lineup Thursday only because starting catcher Carlos Ruiz is on the disabled list because of lower back inflammation.

Ruiz, however, went 1-for-5 with a sacrifice fly in his second extended spring training game on Wednesday and is eligible to be activated off the disabled list on Friday.

Ruiz's return it a timely one. The only other catcher on the 40-man roster, Dane Sardinha, has played in only 50 major league games.

The only other candidate for playing time in the big leagues probably would be 30-year-old minor league journeyman Erik Kratz, whose major league resume is limited to nine games with the Pirates in 2010.

The Phillies began the season without two projected regular position players on the disabled list, Chase Utley and Domonic Brown, and currently have Utley, Ruiz, relievers Brad Lidge and Jose Contreras and starting pitcher Roy Oswalt on the disabled list.
