Phillies Acquire Bowker From Pittsburgh

In looking for a left-handed bat to bring off the bench, the Phillies had set their aim for a Jim Thome type. Their aim had to lower slightly, but they wound up with first baseman/outfielder John Bowker as an addition to their bench.

A week ago, the Phillies lost out on getting Jim Thome from the Minnesota Twins. Their search carried them to Pittsburgh where they found John Bowker to add to their bench and provide some left-handed power.

Bowker, originally selected in the third round of the 2004 Draft by the San Francisco Giants, spent most of this season at Triple-A Indianapolis. Bowker hit 15-76-.306 in 106 games with Indy and hit .235 in 19 games with the Pirates. Bowker, 28, is a career .237 hitter in 183 games with San Francisco and another 45 with Pittsburgh. He has 17 career major league home runs.

The Phillies will send either a player to be named later or cash considerations to Pittsburgh to complete the deal.

To make room on their major league roster for Bowker, the Phillies optioned right-hander Michael Schwimer back to Lehigh Valley. Schwimer posted a 3.60 ERA in three appearances with the Phillies in his first major league stint.

Bowker's arrival may start the countdown to the end of Ross Gload's tenure with the Phillies. Gload has been nursing a bad hip through almost all of the season that has limited him to primarily pinch-hit duties. Gload has hit .235 in 85 at-bats this season with six RBI for the Phillies.

It's expected that Bowker will join the Phillies in Cincinnati in time for Wednesday night's game.
