Needing to improve their bench, the Phillies agreed to send either a player-to-be-named-later or cash to the Colorado Rockies for Ty Wigginton. The addition of Wigginton will give added depth to the Phillies roster.

The Phillies have long been interested in Ty Wigginton. As somewhat of a super-utility guy, Wigginton has had a nice career playing for the Mets, Orioles, Rays, Astros and Rockies as he enters his ninth full season in the majors.

GM Ruben Amaro Jr. decided to send either a player or cash to the Rockies to get Wigginton, who is owed $4 million this season and has a $4 million option with a $0.5 million buyout for the 2013 season. The Rockies will pay approximately half of Wigginton's salary in 2011 and their return will be contingent on whether or not the Phillies pick up Wigginton's 2013 option.

After signing with Colorado as a free agent last winter, Wigginton had a disappointing season with the Rockies and spent time on the DL with a hamstring injury. He finished the season with 15 home runs and a .242 average. Overall, Wigginton is a career .265/.325/.443 hitter over parts of ten seasons in the majors.

Wigginton has spent most of his career as an infielder, playing at third, second, first and shortstop, but he has also played a total of 76 games as a corner outfielder.

It's most likely that Wigginton will move around quite a bit with the Phillies, possibly playing first or third base most of the time, but also likely seeing some time in the middle infield and corner outfield positions.
