The Phillies and Cole Hamels have had a long relationship and they avoided arbitration and extended that relationship for one more season with the signing of a one-year deal.

The Phillies settled their biggest arbitration case by reaching agreement with left-hander Cole Hamels.

The 2008 World Series MVP received a $15 million, one-year deal, the highest ever for any arbitration-eligible pitcher still under team control. The amount beats the $12.4 million received by Carlos Zambrano from the Chicago Cubs in 2007. Hamels went 14-9 with a 2.79 ERA in 32 games last year, and was selected to his second career All-Star Game. He finished fifth in National League Cy Young Award voting.

The team previously avoided arbitration with Kyle Kendrick by coming to an agreement on a one-year, $3.585 million contract for the 2012 season.

The 27-year-old Kendrick is expected to hold the same role as he did last season as the Phillies' long man and sixth starter in a five-man rotation.

Because of injuries to starters Joe Blanton and Roy Oswalt, Kendrick excelled in the role last season, going 8-6 with a career-best 3.22 ERA in 34 games, including 15 starts.

Against NL East competition, Kendrick was 5-2 with a 2.14 ERA.

The Phillies and Hunter Pence were unable to reach an agreement on an extension and may have to depend on arbitration to settle the issue. Pence filed an arbitration request for $11.8 million, while the Phillies are offering $9 million.
