Former Phils Broadcaster Musser Dead at 74

Posted Jan 23, 2012

A member of the Phillies broadcasting family for 26 years, Andy Musser was a big part of some great Phillies teams over the years. Musser passed away Sunday at age 74.

"He buried it!"

Those three words live in the memory of many Phillies fans as the historic call from Andy Musser when Mike Schmidt homered to left at Olympic Stadium to beat the Expos on the second-to-last day of the 1980 season and win the National League East Championship.

Musser worked in the Phillies booth from 1976-2001 and also broadcast many other sports events, including two Super Bowls and two Masters Championships, besides two World Series. In his 26 seasons, Musser missed just two games behind the microphone.

Chris Wheeler, the last remaining member of what is thought to be one of the best broadcast teams in the history of Philadelphia sports, said Musser was the guy who held that group - Musser, Wheeler, Richie Ashburn and Harry Kalas - together for all those years.

"I can't look at anybody in my life who was more important than Andy Musser. I owe him everything," Wheeler told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Andy was the guy who held the booth together, we always said."

Throughout his career, Musser broadcast for the Phillies, 76ers and Eagles. His time with the Sixers included when the team won the NBA Championship behind Wilt Chamberlain in 1967.

Musser is survived by his wife of 50 years, his two children and four grandchildren.
