If you're a Phillies' infielder, you might want to be sure your health insurance is intact. Michael Martinez became another infield casualty on Tuesday when he broke a bone in his foot.

Michael Martinez seemed pretty adamant with Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan that he was okay and didn't need to come out of Tuesday's ball game against Baltimore. Martinez had been hit in the foot by a pitch, but convinced Sheridan he was okay and could stay in the game. The evidence came a little while later when Freddy Galvis tripled and Martinez was hobbling badly between third and home.

After the game, Martinez was walking around in an orthopedic boot as a precaution until the boot became his new best friend when an x-ray revealed a fractured fourth metatarsal in his right foot. The injury will keep Martinez out of action, but an exact timetable hasn't been put together just yet.

Even though Martinez wasn't enjoying the best of springs defensively, he was hitting .323 and seemed destined to stick with the big league club. After all, the only players in camp who could truly play shortstop were Martinez, Jimmy Rollins and Freddy Galvis and Galvis figures to be starting at second base.

Now, Martinez figures to open the year on the DL along with infielders Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.

There had been speculation prior to Martinez' injury that the Phillies would explore the trade market and/or waiver wires for infield help. That speculation is now pretty much a definite.
