Ruiz to start 2013 with 25 game suspension

Carlos Ruiz, who was the lone steadying influence on the Phillies last season, has tested positive for Adderall. The result is a 25-game suspension to start the 2013 season.

Carlos Ruiz, who had a career-year in 2012, will miss the first 25 games of the 2013 season after failing two league mandated drug tests. In both tests, Ruiz tested positive for Adderall, a drug used to combat ADHD.

In responding to the suspension, Ruiz issued a statement stating that he would not appeal the suspension and offering apologies to his teammates and fans.

Players can receive a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) if they are prescribed Adderall or other drugs to treat existing medical conditions, but Ruiz did not apply for such an exemption. It's not clear if he will apply for an exemption in the future.

Infielder Kevin Frandsen is going through a long process of getting a TUE to use Ridalin, which he takes for ADHD.

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said the team will not seek any big-name signings to fill Ruiz' roster spot. Eric Kratz, who filled in for Ruiz for much of last season, while Ruiz was on the DL, will likely take over as the team's starting catcher.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the Phillies announced the signing of catcher Humberto Quintero to a minor league deal not long before the announcement of Ruiz' suspension was made. Recommended Stories
