The Phillies looked around for some veteran infield help and found some in veteran John McDonald from the Cleveland Indians. McDonald will join the Phillies on Friday, meaning someone will be headed down to Lehigh Valley.

The Phillies have fired their first shot of the trade season. Well, okay, they made a move, even though it's not exactly what you would consider a shot. Veteran infielder John McDonald comes to the Phillies for the ever-popular player to be named later or cash, which in this case, will likely be a cash deal.

McDonald has just over 11 years of major league service with Cleveland, Toronto, Detroit, Arizona and Pittsburgh and is known primarily for his defensive ability and the fact that he can play third, short, second and in the outfield. In 978 major league games, McDonald is a career .236 hitter.

McDonald was dealt from Arizona to the Pirates in March before being dealt back to the Indians, where he started his career on June 10th, only to be designated for assignment yesterday to make room for Asdrubal Cabrera.

To make room for McDonald on the 40-man roster, the Phillies outrighted catcher Steven Lerud to Lehigh Valley. Lerud now has 72 hours to accept or decline the assignment, which would leave the IronPigs with Cameron Rupp as the only catcher on their roster. The Phillies will also need to make a move to clear a spot on the 25-man roster, which they will do Friday when McDonald reports. It's likely that infielder Freddy Galvis will be optioned to Lehigh Valley, where he would get regular playing time.
