Cards Winter Warm-Up audio: Monday, 1/20/14

Like others, Holliday signed for fans and charity

Press interviews from the St. Louis Cardinals Winter Warm-Up on Monday, January 20. Matt Holliday talks PEDs, generally and specifically.

Following are selected interviews held during day three of the St. Louis Cardinals Winter Warm-Up at the Hyatt Regency at the Arch on Monday, January 20, 2014.

Please check back throughout the day for additional interviews to be added to this page.

Also catch Saturday's day one and Sunday's day two interviews. Also, at The Cardinal Nation Blog, photos are posted from each day: Saturday and Sunday.

Matt Holliday
Holliday opened by providing more details about his unique and extensive off-season program that includes Trevor Rosenthal, among others. The outfielder repeated his stance against PEDs, and wants to see a "level playing field" for all players.

Holliday acknowledged that Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak called him before the Jhonny Peralta announcement was made, due to Holliday's strong public comments on the issue.

He does not feel that Peralta owes his new teammates an apology or explanation. Holliday said he is a forgiving person and it is now in the past.

Sam Freeman
Caught in a numbers game for left-handed relievers after being passed by Kevin Siegrist, Freeman is focusing on what he can control. He wants to improve in his two-strike execution and do a better job of putting batters away.

Freeman is already throwing bullpens in preparation for 2014. (He is likely to return to Memphis to open the season.)

Michael Wacha
The post-season star said he gave his arm a break, "shutting down" for two weeks following the World Series, an annual ritual for him. He began throwing again after Christmas.

Wacha is going into spring camp with the mindset to win a job. Noted the team has "unbelievable arms." Wacha understands that others have high expectations for him, but he does not want to try to do too much. He has personal goals which he would not share.

Mike Matheny
The manager spent almost 30 minutes with the media, so I encourage you to listen to the entire clip. Matheny said he was surprised how long the World Series stuck with him.

He sees the 2014 rotation competition as "fierce". Matheny said trying to set the lineup would be a "disservice" since the players are coming to camp to compete. Says guys can "force the issue" with their play.

Matheny calls expanded instant replay "a step in the right direction" and says the initiative to reduce catcher collisions is "in a good spot" – learning from other sports. Glad MLB is being proactive.

Peter Bourjos
The new centerfielder was our last interview subject of the weekend. Bourjos said he thought he would be traded this off-season and noted that Albert Pujols called him after the trade and was very positive. He told him that Cardinals fans know the game.

Bourjos did not accept the idea that he is injury prone, pointing out one was an extra innings hamstring injury in a cold Oakland night and the other was a hit by pitch on the wrist. He is fine now, but was not cleared to hit until December. He does not take many walks, seeing his style as a "gap-to-gap, aggressive hitter".

He is not coming to camp with the expectation of having a starting job. Bourjos is coming to compete and says he would be happy in any role, noting the National League offers more late-game entry possibilities than the AL.

When asked about his goals, Bourjos first said he would "like to be in the 40's" in stolen bases if he gets regular starters time in 2014. A minute later, he backed that down to "in the 30-to-40 range".
