Beating Marlins is all in Ledee's Work

Ricky Ledee hits his 7th inning homerun.

Kevin Millwood owes Ricky Ledee – big time! Ledee robbed the Marlins of one run with a leaping catch in the outfield and then gave Millwood and the Phillies a run with a homerun of his own. Ledee's big night helped the Phillies beat the Marlins 2-1, moving the Phils back into sole possession of first place thanks to a Braves' loss.

Damion Easley definitely has Kevin Millwood's number. The veteran second baseman hit Millwood hard every time he faced him Wednesday night, but Millwood was able to work around the problem with a little help from Ricky Ledee.

With the Phillies up 1-0 in the fifth inning, Easley hit a long fly ball to deep left field that Ledee extended over the fence to catch – making the play look easy – and robbing Easley and the Marlins of a game tying homerun. Two innings later, Easley would single to drive in the Marlins only run of the night, tying the game 1-1.

The Phillies got a run in the bottom of the third, thanks to the speed of Jimmy Rollins. With two outs, Rollins singled and immediately stole second. Catcher Matt Treanor's throw went off the glove of Easley and Rollins scampered to third. Placido Polanco followed with an RBI single as the Phillies went up 1-0.

Millwood (8-5) lasted through seven innings, giving up seven hits and one walk. "He got the ball down tonight, we need him to do that," said Larry Bowa. He also surrendered just the one run and was sitting in the dugout, knowing that he was out of the game when Ledee came to the plate in the seventh. Ledee lined a pitch from A.J. Burnett (1-5) just over the right field fence, putting the Phillies up 2-1 and making Millwood eligible to pick up the win. The homerun was Ledee's seventh of the season. "I knew he hit it good, but I was afraid that it had a little too much top spin to get out," remarked Bowa.

Tim Worrell got the first two outs of the eighth inning and Billy Wagner came on to strike out Hee Seop Choi to end the inning. Wagner returned for the ninth inning and surrendered a walk, but kept the Marlins off the board, preserving the win for the Phillies and recording his 16th save of the season.

The win was the Phillies' first over Florida since September 18th of last year.

The Phillies started the night tied for first place with Atlanta at the top of the NL East. Atlanta lost to Pittsburgh, thanks to a two-run homerun from Tike Redman. The Braves loss and Phillies win puts the Phils back in solo possession of first place by a game over the Braves. Ironically, former Phillies' closer Jose Mesa helped his old team by saving his 27th game of the season for Pittsburgh.

The short two-game series with Florida wraps up Thursday afternoon when Randy Wolf (4-5, 3.45) goes against Carl Pavano (9-4, 2.83).
