Thome & Wolf Homerun Battle Leads Phillies

Randy Wolf takes a curtain call.

With the Phillies needing some offense, Randy Wolf decided to give them some. Wolf hit two homeruns and Jim Thome chipped in with two of his own as the Phillies used six homeruns to beat Colorado 15-4. Wolf also gave the Phillies seven innings of work from the mound.

Randy Wolf homered twice and drove in three runs and Jim Thome added a pair of homeruns as the Phillies routed the Colorado Rockies, 15-4.

After helping stake himself to a 5-0 lead with a solo homer in the third, Wolf ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing four runs on five hits. But after singling and scoring on Jimmy Rollins' two-run blast in the bottom of the inning, Wolf belted a two-run shot in the sixth to give Philadelphia a 9-4 cushion.

Wolf became the eighth pitcher in club history to post a two-homer game and first since Robert Person accomplished the feat on June 2, 2002 against Montreal. His three hits are the most by a Phillies pitcher since Nelson Figueroa had three on July 24, 2001 vs. the Expos.

"I could see using him as a pinch hitter," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "He gives you quality at-bats."

On the mound, Wolf (5-7) allowed four runs and nine hits in seven innings, striking out six without a walk. The left-hander won for the first time since July 17 and second time in eight starts.

Thome tied Cincinnati's Adam Dunn for the major league homerun lead at 35, belting a two-run shot in the third and adding a solo blast in the seventh. It was the third multi-homer game of the season for Thome and 35th of his career.

Instead of discussing his own achievements, Thome elected to talk about Wolf's accomplishments.

"We came out and swung the bats very well," he said. "Wolfie did a great job. It was awesome to see his night."

Chase Utley also homered for Philadelphia, which set a season high with six homeruns, the most since hitting a team-record seven against the New York Mets on September 8, 1998.

Colorado starter Jason Jennings (10-10) took the loss, surrendering seven runs and six hits in four innings. The righthander walked two, struck out four and served up a career high-tying three homers.

Bobby Abreu gave Philadelphia the lead with an RBI double in the second and Wolf doubled it with a leadoff homer in the third. Rollins followed with a walk and scored on Placido Polanco's two-base hit, putting the Phillies ahead, 3-0. After Utley flied out, Thome launched a 3-2 pitch into the second deck in right field, making it 5-0.

But with one out in the fourth, Vinny Castilla, Jeromy Burnitz and Preston Wilson hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Rookie Matt Holliday followed with a three-run double and Charles Johnson delivered a run-scoring single to draw the Rockies within a run. Wolf avoided further damage by striking out Jennings, who nearly missed a homerun one pitch earlier, and Luis Gonzalez.

After Rollins and Wolf hit two-run shots, Thome staked Philadelphia to a 10-4 advantage with a solo blast with two outs in the seventh. Later in the inning, Mike Lieberthal hit an RBI double and Jason Michaels added a run-scoring single.

Utley capped the scoring with a three-run shot in the eighth off Colorado reliever Allan Simpson, who yielded six runs and six hits in two innings.

The four game series wraps up Thursday night with newly acquired Cory Lidle (7-10, 5.32) going against Shawn Estes (12-4, 5.77).
