By now, both Endy Chavez and Marlon Byrd were supposed to be budding superstars for their respective teams. Instead, they've now swapped uniforms in an effort to reestablish their careers with a change of scenery. The Phillies and Nationals were able to work out a deal quickly to swap the two young center fielders.

Batting practice was underway at Citizens Bank Park when GM Ed Wade got a call from Nationals GM Jim Bowden. Shortly after the Phillies and Reds started their game, the two GMs agreed on swapping center fielders.

Marlon Byrd, who was hitting .308 since recovering from a fractured finger and being recalled from AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre, headed for the west coast to join the Washington Nationals while Endy Chavez jumped a plane headed the other direction.

Byrd, 27, was backing up both Kenny Lofton and Jason Michaels in center field. With Lofton on the DL, Byrd had gotten more at bats lately. The Phillies had shopped Byrd during the winter with deals to Arizona, Colorado, Milwaukee and Los Angeles all falling apart before a deal could be worked out. With the addition of Lofton, Byrd had officially lost his center field job with the Phillies and was seemingly in need of a change of scenery.

"Sometimes you get to a point where a player has to go somewhere and reestablish himself," said Phillies general manager Ed Wade. "I hope it works out for Byrd and for us."

Chavez, also 27, had started the season at AAA after failing to make the Nationals out of spring training. When Terrmel Sledge wound up on the DL, Chavez was recalled, but posted just a .222 average over seven games and found himself back in the minors.

"I don't think either player was going to go forward in the organizations they were in," said Nationals GM Jim Bowden.
