Randy Ruiz Hit With 30 Day Suspension
Randy Ruiz

Randy Ruiz insisted that he hadn't taken anything banned under the MLB substance abuse policy, but his appeal of a 30 day suspension was denied. The suspension will likely cost Ruiz a shot at the Eastern League triple crown and could set back his chances at a promotion to AAA this season.

Randy Ruiz started the season with a quiet suspension for violating the MLB substance abuse policy. Ruiz was inexplicably held back in extended spring camp until the minor league season was under way. It all seemed strange until an admission came that Ruiz had failed a drug test and was actually serving a 15 day suspension.

Before long came word that Ruiz had failed a second test, which would result in a 30 day suspension under the guidelines of the substance abuse policy. Ruiz appealed the suspension, arguing that he had taken an over the counter substance, which resulted in the positive test. The appeal was heard on Thursday and a day later, it was announced that the appeal had been denied and Ruiz would have to sit for 30 days.

The policy calls for news on exactly what substance a player tested positive for to be held in strictest confidence, so no official word on the exact results of the test were announced.

Ruiz played at Lakewood last season and blasted 17 homeruns with 91 RBI and a .288 average for the BlueClaws. This season in Reading, he was hitting .356 with 25 homeruns and 84 RBI at AA Reading, after skipping over the High-A level at Clearwater.

To fill Ruiz' place on the roster, the Reading Phillies received Nate Grindell off the AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre roster.
