Huppert Takes Over Lakewood Staff

The long rumored move of Dave Huppert to the Phillies organization became official with Huppert being named the manager of the Lakewood BlueClaws. Huppert's decision to come to Lakewood may have been hastened by the changes made on the Nats' coaching staff.

Once P.J. Forbes was promoted to manage the Reading Phillies, the search began to find a new manager for the Lakewood BlueClaws. The Phillies looked outside the organization and have tapped Dave Huppert to lead the 2006 BlueClaws.

During the 2005 season, Huppert, 48, was the third-base coach for the Washington Nationals. Previously, he spent 18 years managing in the minors at every level. He is probably best known for catching 31 innings of the longest professional baseball game in history on April 18, 1981 for the Rochester Red Wings. The game was 8 hours and 25 minutes long and finally ended after 33 innings with the Pawtucket Red Sox winning 3-2.

Returning for his third season as a pitching coach in the Phillies system is Steve Schrenk, 37. Schrenk's only major league pitching time came with the Phillies in 1999 and 2000.

Hitting coach Ken Dominguez, 51, comes to the BlueClaws after J.P. Roberge announced his retirement. Dominguez spent 2005 as the hitting coach for the Clearwater Threshers and has coached or managed at the amateur or minor league level since 1977.

The 2006 BlueClaws trainer has yet to be named. Last season's trainer, Jason Kirkman, has been promoted to the Clearwater Threshers. Recommended Stories
