Scott Mathieson was also officially optioned to Reading as what could be an all-star rotation at the AA level starts to take shape. Giovany Gonzalez, another cut victim, wasn't officially assigned to Reading, but was sent back to the minor league complex. It's likely that he and Mathieson, along with Cole Hamels and now Segovia, will make up the Reading starting rotation. Jason Jaramillo will likely be catching those top pitching prospects and he was one of the cuts made on Tuesday as well.
The Phillies assigned outfielder Michael Bourn and left-hander Daniel Haigwood to AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre. Neither assignment was a surprise. Bourn, who skipped over Clearwater to play at AA Reading last season, was in his first major league camp just to get his feet wet a little.
Other cuts included catcher John Vanden Berg, who could wind up at either AA or AAA and pitchers Matt White, Aaron Myette and Jeremy Cummings. All three pitchers are likely to start the year at AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
