Myers Becomes Newest Member of the Bullpen

Think back to Spring Training when there was this seemingly absurd idea of Brett Myers joining the Phillies bullpen. Well, welcome to the world of the absurd.

Charlie Manuel announced that starter Brett Myers, who threw what he termed a productive bullpen session on Tuesday, is headed to the bullpen. Myers is 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA in three starts. After his bullpen session Tuesday, he announced that he had found a flaw in his delivery, specifically that he was dropping his arm angle, which caused his pitches to flatten out.

Even with the revelation, Manuel decided to make the switch and move Myers to the bullpen. The move prompts three scenarios to ponder.

  1. Charlie Manuel simply wanted to shake things up and make a move to help turn things around.
  2. The Phillies are showcasing Jon Lieber - who will take Myers' spot in the bullpen - for a potential trade.
  3. The next announcement coming from the Phillies could be that Tom Gordon is headed for the disabled list and that the much speculated move of Myers to become a closer is becoming reality.

Officially, Myers role will be to serve as a set-up man for Gordon. Manuel talked to Myers before making the move and his "ace" agreed to move to the bullpen. There hasn't been any speculation on whether the move is for the short-term or long-term.

As for Lieber, he's posted an 11.57 ERA in two relief appearances. He will make his first start of the season Friday night in Cincinnati.
