Geary Remembers His Old Friend

Posted Apr 30, 2007

While the baseball world mourns the loss of one of their own, many in baseball didn't know Josh Hancock very well. One of the people who knew him best was Phillies' reliever Geoff Geary.

Geoff Geary and Josh Hancock were roommates - and competitors for a job in the Phillies bullpen - during spring training in 2004. They became such good friends that last August, when the Phillies visited St. Louis, they went to dinner together.

So, Geary was in disbelief Sunday when he heard Hancock died in a car crash.

"It hasn't really set in yet," a somber Geary said. "I didn't believe it. I had to go to the Internet before it really made sense, and it still doesn't make sense."

Geary said Hancock, 29, was a notorious prankster. Once, Hancock got a hold of the keys to Geary's rental car and stuck baby powder in the heating and air conditioning vents. Residue from the power was all over the dashboard, but the only way for Geary to clean the vents was to turn on the air conditioning, expelling the powder all over the inside of the car.

"He was a good guy, on and off the field," Geary said. "You never want to deal with anything like this. It's terrible."

Hancock spent parts of the 2003 and 2004 seasons with the Phillies. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2004 in the deal that brought Todd Jones to the Phillies.

Ryan Madson, another teammate of Hancock's in Philadelphia and at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, said he was Hancock's "wingman" for many of his pranks.

"I'll miss him," Madson said.
