Ryan Howard Gets His Kirk Gibson Moment

Things haven't been going very well for Ryan Howard this season, to say the least. But Wednesday, he slammed a pinch-hit homerun and is on a bit of a power surge.

Ryan Howard has been dreaming of a Kirk Gibson moment.

He got it Wednesday.

Howard, who didn't start any of the three games at Arizona because of a sore left quadriceps, rose from the bench in the seventh inning and slugged a pinch grand slam off right-handed reliever Brandon Medders to snap a 3-3 tie and help the Phillies avoid a three-game sweep by the Diamondbacks.

Last Sunday, Howard said his tender quad has left him uncomfortable in the batter's box and made it difficult to shift weight from his left (back) leg to his right leg. The injury helped produce the .198 average with which Howard entered Wednesday night's game.

Howard remains scheduled to have his leg examined by team physician Michael Ciccotti before Friday night's game against the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park. It's possible that Howard could be placed on the disabled list if the Phillies believe that would help his quad heal faster.

But Howard's last three hits have all been home runs. Interestingly, they're the only three hits he has in May. Howard is 3-for-20 for a .105 average.
