As It Happened: The Deadline Blog
The Red Sox deepen their pen.
The Red Sox deepen their pen.

Posted Jul 31, 2007

The non-waiver trading period is now over. Please put down your pencils. The Phillies come away with an alleged wife beater and nothing else to show from the final day of unwaivered trading. Here's our blog showing the minute-by-minute progress of deadline afternoon.

Much of the news right now is about the Red Sox closing in on Eric Gagne, who would have to waive his no-trade clause to go to Boston. Odds are that will happen if the Sox guarantee the final year of his deal at $3 million.

4:00 p.m. The deadline is officially here and it appears that all the Phillies got was an alleged wife beater. Bring on the Chris Roberson in right field era (or at least for a week or two).

3:53 p.m. Jesus Merchan is the player sent to the Mariners for Mateo. Word is that there is a first degree assault charge pending on Mateo. Great.

3:45 p.m. Phillies get Julio Mateo (pitcher) from the Seattle Mariners. Mateo has had some "issues", but has a quality arm.

3:40 p.m. Gagne is officially a member of the Boston Red Sox. Sox give up Kason Gabbard, David Murphy and Engel Beltre to get him.

3:26 p.m. Did Pat Gillick call in sick today? Forget to pay his cell phone bill? Where is he?

3:20 p.m. Peter Gammons doesn't believe that the Mets and Nats will work out a deal for Cordero and that Phillip Humber is a "second-tier prospect" and won't get the deal done.

3:10 p.m. Morgan Ensberg apparently headed to the Padres to play a utility role.

3:08 p.m. The Red Sox and Eric Gagne are working out the language of an extension to his contract and that's all that's holding up the deal. The Sox are giving up some pretty attractive prospects to get the deal done.

3:00 p.m. The Phillies are completely quiet at this point in the proceedings and there's just one hour left until the deadline hits.

2:50 p.m. SI.com is reporting that the bidding for Chad Cordero is down to Arizona and the NY Mets.

2:48 p.m. The Mark Teixeira to Atlanta deal is done and does NOT involve Kyle Davies. Jayson Stark also reports that the Davies deal to the Kansas City Royals for Octavio Dotel is also a done deal.

2:35 p.m. ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the A's and Dodgers have resumed talks about Joe Blanton. Last night it looked like the deal was done, but the Dodgers are desperate for pitching and are giving it another shot.
