Pitching Style: Nolan Mulligan has the kind of style that can scare
hitters if he develops more velocity. He has no problem with coming inside on
hitters and he has good enough movement on his pitches to keep hitters guessing.
In his first pro season, he struck out 27 in 28 innings and showed good control,
walking just eight on the season with the GCL Phillies.
Projection: Mulligan is hard to read. He pitched at three different
small schools - Broward CC, High Point University and Lynn University - but
showed enough to get drafted twice before the Phillies took him in 2007. He was
drafted as high as the 25th round by the Giants out of high school in 2003, but
thought he could do better by going to Broward. A year later, the Twins took him
in the 32nd round, but again, he didn't sign. Looking back, he probably would
have been better served baseball-wise, had he signed with the Giants. He put up
decent college numbers, but the Phillies are going to have to work long and hard
with him to get him through the system in any sort of timely manner and since
he'll be 23 by the time Minor League Camp starts, the clock is ticking.
What else you should know about Nolan Mulligan: In the 2007
Draft, teams didn't have to worry about Mulligan saying "no" again, since he was
out of college eligibility.
