Phillies Prospect #38: Miguel Matos

The Phillies brought Miguel Matos to the states for the 2007 season and were pleased with what they got out of him. There's more work for him to do, but Matos is a prospect worth watching.

Acquired: Signed as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic.

B: R  T: R  /  Height: 6' 4"  /  Weight: 170 lbs.

Birth Date: October 26, 1987

2007 Team: Gulf Coast League Phillies

Games/Games Started in 2007: 12 g / 8 gs

Repertoire:  Miguel Matos is a hard throwing right-hander who gets good movement on his fastball, making him tough to hit. His secondary pitches aren't fully developed, but his change-up is getting better and could be a good compliment to his fastball. His slider and curve are works in progress and he's sometimes prone to sticking a little too much with his fastball, which is good enough to get hitters out at the lower levels of the minors, but will need some other pitches to work off of as he moves to higher levels.

Pitching Style: As with many young pitchers, Matos found out first hand that when you face better hitters, they're more likely to take advantage of mistakes. Matos relies on location with his fastball and is generally a strikeout pitcher who gets slightly more groundball outs than he does fly ball outs. His control is good, but when he misses, it's generally up in the zone, which gets him into trouble.

Projection: For now, Matos projects as either a back of the rotation starter or a journeyman type reliever. His future is going to depend on how well and how quickly his secondary pitches develop. His basic numbers look pretty good, but opponents hit him at a .260 pace last season and that was in the Gulf Coast League. The Phillies aren't sure how to use him and are leaning toward having him pitch out of the bullpen, but want him to get more innings right now to work on his secondary pitches. Matos had a very impressive 2006 season in the Dominican Summer League and the transition to pitching in the states went relatively well for him, giving some hope that he can fix some flaws and become a higher projected prospect than he is right now.
