Moyer Looks Ready To Go; Phils Beat Reds

Jamie Moyer and Travis Blackley each threw three shutout innings against Cincinnati as the Phillies beat the Reds 8-1 in the Grapefruit League opener.

It was a veteran and a Major League wannabe that led the Phillies pitching staff on Wednesday as Jamie Moyer and Travis Blackley blanked the Reds for six innings in the Grapefruit League opener. Moyer (1-0) started and allowed just one hit in the first three innings and was followed by Blackley, who also allowed just one hit.

Two newcomers had nice games for the Phillies as Pedro Feliz had a strong start to his Phillies career, going 2-for-2 and Eric Bruntlett, who now finds himself fighting for a utility spot, also went 2-for-2 against Cincinnati. Greg Dobbs, who is in the mix for a utility role at third base, hit the lone home run for the Phillies in the 8-1 win.

The lone Reds run came in the seventh when Adam Rosales homered off Clay Condrey, who allowed one run in his lone inning of work. Phillies pitchers allowed just five hits on the day.

Top Phillies prospect Carlos Carrasco threw a perfect inning in the eighth and Ryan Madson made it through the ninth, but gave up two hits.

The Phillies face the Pirates on Thursday with Kyle Kendrick, Joe Savery and Josh Outman scheduled to pitch. Recommended Stories
