In the end, the Phillies had to choose between Ruben Amaro, Jr. and Mike Arbuckle to follow Pat Gillick as the team's GM. The decision to go with Amaro, brings about the exit of Arbuckle from the Phillies organization.

The Phillies will hold a 10 a.m. press conference at Citizens Bank Park Monday to introduce Ruben Amaro, Jr. as their new GM. Phillies president and now former GM Pat Gillick will both be on hand as the torch officially passes.

Amaro has spent ten years in the Phillies front office after serving as bat boy for their 1980 World Series team and serving two terms as a player for the Phillies during his career. Amaro was initially hired as Assistant GM by Ed Wade and handled contract negotiations under both Wade and Gillick before taking over the lead position.

The Phillies had pretty well determined some time ago that they would stay in-house to find their new general manager and the decision came down to Amaro and Mike Arbuckle. Both served as assistants under Wade and Gillick, with Arbuckle being the point man on player development and scouting and having a big role in handling the Phillies drafts.

It is expected that Arbuckle has respectfully submitted his resignation and will seek a job with another organization.

Immediately after Monday's announcement, Amaro will head to California for the GM meetings, which will be held this week. He will also start making decisions such as pending free agents Pat Burrell and Jamie Moyer, who are both eligible for free agency. Neither player has officially filed for free agency, but it is expected that Burrell will not only file for free agency, but is likely to sign elsewhere. Moyer is expected to re-sign with the Phillies.

As for Gillick, there is speculation that he may stay on as a consultant to the team, but will have no official role in front office moves.
