"Discomfort" is becoming a pretty big word around the Phillies these days. First, Brad Lidge felt some "discomfort" in his right knee - yes, that's the same one he had surgery on in February of 2008 - and had an MRI. Then, Carlos Ruiz is scratched from the lineup for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs because of "discomfort" after batting practice.
Lidge's MRI showed no structural damage, but he was unavailable for Monday night's game against the Nationals. The injury is one of those inflammation things, which is hard to put a timetable to for his return, so he's listed as day-to-day, but it wouldn't be surprising for him to miss at least a couple more games. In fact, perhaps it would be wise to hold him out of the Nationals series and hope he's healthy enough to face the Mets this weekend.
As for Carlos Ruiz, he's being evaluated today in Philadelphia and there's no word on where he goes from here. The initial plan had him playing for Lehigh Valley last night and then finishing up his rehab with a game in Reading on Tuesday before rejoining the team either Wednesday or Friday. Now, that's all up in the air.
If Lidge were to miss any serious time, Gary Majewski would be the most likely option to fill a spot in the bullpen. Majewski hasn't allowed an earned run in his last nine innings of work and has two saves on the season with a 0.75 ERA. On the downside, all three of the runners that he's inherited have scored. Majewski was one of the last cuts in spring training.
Actually, the IronPigs bullpen has allowed just one earned run in their last 28 innings of work.
