All season long, Brad Lidge has said that his problems on the mound weren't because of an injury, although he's hinted at times that he did have some "discomfort" in his knee. Now, Lidge winds up on the DL with a right knee sprain.

Just as the Phillies head into a three-game set with the New York Mets, Brad Lidge winds up on the DL. Over the weekend, Lidge blew two saves against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but had actually been pitching pretty well after a horrid start to the season. Up until his implosion against the Dodgers, Lidge had converted five save opportunities in a row and had a 1.42 ERA in those games.

Ryan Madson will assume the closer's role for the Phillies until Lidge can return. Madson has held hitters to a .202 average this season and has converted two of the three save opportunities that he's been given and is unscored on in his last 12 outings, covering 10 2/3 innings of work. J.C. Romero, who was activated last week after being suspended for the first 50 games of the season, will move into Madson's setup role.

Rather than recalling another reliever, the Phillies opted to purchase the contract of veteran catcher Paul Bako from Double-A Reading. Bako signed a minor league deal with the Phillies on May 18 and hit .357 with 10 RBI in 10 games with Reading. Bako will join the club in New York and be available for the first game of the series against the Mets. Bako could provide the Phillies with an extra bat off the bench for interleague play, which begins on Friday when the Phillies host Terry Francona and the Boston Red Sox.

In minor league injury news, Clearwater outfielder Dominic Brown will miss three or four weeks with a broken finger. Phillies minor league director of operations, Steve Noworyta, confirmed the injury, which happened Monday night when Brown was hit by a pitch. Ironically, Brown stayed in the game and stole second and third and eventually scored. He currently ranks third in the Florida State League in home runs (13) and RBI (38).
