The Phillies looked toward the high school ranks for their first pick in the 2009 Draft. Outfielder Kelly Dugan of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California was taken with the 75th overall pick.
The switch-hitting outfielder has shown some power potential in high school and seems to be a projectable offensive player. Dugan has decent defensive skills and above average speed.
The Phillies could face a major obstacle in signing Dugan by the August 17th deadline, because Dugan has a commitment to attend Pepperdine University. He didn't publicly tip his hand prior to the draft as to whether he would sign with a professional team or attend Pepperdine.
If the name Dugan sounds familiar, you may be thinking of Kelly Dugan's father, Dennis. The elder Dugan played private investigator Richie Brockelman in the 1970s series The Rockford Files and more recently, has gone on to direct Adam Sandler in movies such as Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy.
