Phils give Rule 5 protection to three players

Jesus Sanchez

As they set their roster by the November 20 deadline, the Phillies have chosen three players to add to the 40 man roster. By adding these players, they keep them out of the Rule 5 Draft.

After dropping Eric Bruntlett and four other players from their 40 man roster on Monday, the Phillies filled three of those spots with young prospects who would have been eligible for the Rule 5 Draft next month.

Outfielder Quintin Berry and pitchers Yohan Flande and Jesus Sanchez have been added to the roster, bringing the Phillies roster to 38.

All three could have potentially been taken by another club had they not been protected, but Berry would have been the most likely to be grabbed. With his speed and defensive abilities, Berry could have potentially been stashed away on a roster by another club, even though he hasn't played above the Double-A level.

Berry, who turns 25 next week, hit .266/.355/.335 with 48 stolen bases at Reading in 2009. He also made just two errors in 135 games with the R-Phils.

Flande, a 23 year old left-hander out of the Dominican Republic, has made steady progress through the organization and reached Double-A last season where he made 13 starts. In those 13 starts, he posted a 4.58 ERA and will return to Reading in 2010 to continue to develop against the hitters at that level.

The most interesting player added to the 40 man roster is 22 year old right-hander Jesus Sanchez. The Phillies acquired Sanchez in the 2006 deal with the Yankees that sent Bobby Abreu to New York. At the time, Sanchez was a young and highly touted catching prospect, but his offense never did develop and the Phillies converted him to a pitcher late in 2008. He pitched at Lakewood last season, where he went 10-6 with a 3.44 ERA in 26 starts.

Carlos Monasterios, the other remaining player in the organization from the Abreu deal, is still unprotected and available for other teams to draft in the Rule 5 Draft. Teams have until Friday to make roster moves and set their rosters prior to the winter meetings when the draft will be held.
