Ross Gload has been around baseball for a long time. He's played in all or parts of ten seasons, but only has just over six years of official service time to his record. Last year with Florida, Gload chipped in with a league-leading 21 pinch-hits for the Marlins and then hit the free agent market at just the right time.
The 33 year-old is a career .283 hitter and can play at first base, in left field and in right field. He hit .261 last season with the Marlins, including a .271 average against right-handers, but just a .194 mark against southpaws. Ironically though, in his career, he's hit .298 against left-handers and .279 against righties.
While his power won't replace Matt Stairs, who was the primary power-hitting lefty off the bench for the Phillies the past couple of seasons, Gload will give the Phillies a more consistent bat off the bench.
The Phillies gave Gload a two-year deal, but the financial terms have not been disclosed.
In his career, Gload has played for both Chicago teams, Kansas City, Colorado and Florida.
