Phillies sign Dominican pitching prospect

Posted Jan 5, 2010

The Phillies have signed a big right-hander in the Dominican Republic and have interest in another prospect from Taiwan.

You may want to keep the name Miguel Nunez tucked away in your head. The Phillies have signed the 6' 6" right-hander as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic.

The signing is reportedly worth $220,000 and Nunez will most likely start his career pitching in the Dominican Summer League.

While Nunez isn't the highest of prospects, he follows in the footsteps of the Phillies game plan for international free agents in that they tend to sign mid-range prospects that they believe may have a big potential upside.

Another international free agent that the Phillies have shown some interest in is Taiwanese outfielder Chia-Jung Lee. Lee is still playing in the collegiate ranks, so the Phillies won't move on him until at least March when the collegiate season ends, and they haven't made a definite decision on whether or not to sign him at this point.
