Phils sign veteran Wilkerson for minors

Brad Wilkerson had reportedly retired last April, but quietly decided on a comeback attempt that will start in the Phillies minor league camp. The veteran outfielder signed a minor league deal without an invitation to big league camp.

The Phillies are cornering the market on former Montreal Expos of the late '90s and early 2000s. With Andy Tracy in minor league camp and Brian Schneider signed as a free agent over the winter, the Phillies made it a trio with the signing of Brad Wilkerson on Tuesday. The three played together at Harrisburg in 1999 and with Ottawa in 2000 and 2001.

Wilkerson, who had seemingly retired last April, signed a minor league deal with the Phillies that does not include an invitation to major league camp.

A veteran of eight major league seasons, Wilkerson started his major league career with the Expos in 2001 and moved to Washington with the club in 2005. From there, he headed to Texas, Seattle and Toronto and was in camp with the Red Sox last spring, but failed to make the club. In 2002, Wilkerson hit .266 with 20 home runs and 59 RBI and finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year balloting.

If he sticks in the Phillies organization, Wilkerson would most likely play at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
