Maybe the Phillies should just consider skipping over Kevin Millwood's spot in the rotation when it comes up against Atlanta. The former Brave is now 0-6 against his former team after the Braves used a six-run inning to beat the Phillies 6-4 in the series finale in Atlanta.
It took five innings, but the Atlanta Braves got to Kevin Millwood yet again.
J.D. Drew belted a three-run homerun off Millwood in a six-run fifth to lead Atlanta to a 6-4 win over the Phillies.
Millwood, who spent his first six seasons with Atlanta, had given up just two hits and a walk before coming undone by two errors in the fifth. Andruw Jones led off the inning with a single and Dewayne Wise bunted up the third base line. Third baseman Tomas Perez charged for the ball and uncorked a wild throw, allowing Jones to score. Phillies second baseman Chase Utley also made a throwing error as Wise went to second. Flustered, Millwood walked Mark DeRosa and yielded a single to Julio Franco. Two outs later, rookie Nick Green had an RBI single. Drew followed with a blast over the left-center field wall to give the Braves the lead with his
12th home run. Jones capped the inning with an RBI single.
Millwood (4-4) gave up all six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. He fell to 0-6 with a 9.10 ERA lifetime against his former team.
Atlanta starter Jaret Wright (4-5) surrendered four runs in the first two innings but settled down. He allowed six hits, struck out six and walked one in five innings.
John Smoltz, the fifth Braves pitcher, tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts for his eighth save.
Atlanta avoided its fourth three-game losing streak of the season and earned a split of the four-game series.
Jim Thome belted a two-run homer in the first and Mike Lieberthal had a solo shot in the second, but the Phillies lost for the fifth time in seven games. The Phillies also got a run on an RBI double by Bobby Abreu in the first inning as they got to Wright early.
The Phillies now start inter-league play with a trip to Chicago to play the White Sox. Ryan Madson (3-1, 1.07) will come out of the bullpen to make his first start of the season and Mark Buehrle (5-1, 3.30) will get the start for Chicago.
