Scouting Report:
It’s a hopelessly generic comment, but Jones is a much better hitter when he uses the whole field and lets his natural power drive doubles and homers into the right-center field gap. Jones has a long swing and a big gut, resulting in an inability to catch up with very good high fastballs that has been increasing the last two-three seasons. He has an infuriating tendency to chase sliders well outside and in the dirt. That said, he’s a solid, dangerous hitters who’s wild inconsistency within seasons hide a fairly impressive consistency for a career. He’s had OPS’ between .836-.900 in five of his last six seasons. Bizarrely, the methods of reaching those totals vary from year to year with Andruw. In 99 and 2002 he drew 76 and 83 walks respectively; he also had good walk totals in his first full season. In 2000, 2001 and 2003 Jones drew under 60 walks.
He has lost several steps defensively, falling from the absolutely unreal heights of his first few years to the lowly status of being merely well above average. His added girth has reduced his range considerably, but he still gets breath-taking jumps on balls, a trait that allows him to make up for some of his reduced range. The added weight has hurt Jones’ stolen base totals as well as his ability to hit triples.
