Biography:
Originally drafted in the 8th round of the 1991 amateur draft by the Mariners, he was shipped to Boston, along with Jason Varitek, at deadline in 1997 for Heathcliff Slocumb. Boston placed Lowe in as a starter for three starts toward the end of the 2001 season and he has been there ever since. He went 21-8 during 2002 with a 2.58 ERA, his first full season as a starter. He finished third in the American League Cy Young balloting and also was second in wins and ERA. Last season he struggled, but benefited from the team’s offensive prowess and went 17-7 with a 4.47 ERA.
