| Biography: |
Scott Kazmir, the Mets first selection in the 2002 draft, hails from Cypress Falls – a suburb of Houston Texas. Kazmir was projected to be the third selection of the first round, but fell to the Mets at 15 because of his size and anticipated bonus request of $3-$4 million. He signed with the Mets for $2.15 million. Kazmir and teammate Clint Evert became the fourth pair of HS teammates to be taken in the first round of the draft. Kazmir signed with the University of Texas – the reigning collegiate National Champions.
Kazmir overpowered HS hitters with his 92-94 mph Fastball that topped out at 97 mph and an excellent slider. He also possesses a promising change up and curve ball. BaseballAmerica named him their high school player of the year based upon his 11-2 record, 0.37 ERA, and 175 K in 75 innings. He issued only 19 walks and allowed 19 hits. Kazmir is an excellent athlete with good speed and power. As a HS junior, he was timed at 6.7 sec. in the 60-yard dash. At Cypress Falls HS, he played OF and often batted cleanup.
Kazmir has been playing organized baseball since 1988: AAU, AABC, American Legion, Dixie, Little League, NABF, NBC, PAL, PONY, YMCA. He has performed against Japanese HS All-Stars in 2000 in the Goodwill Series and against international competition in the BaseballAmerica sponsored Perfect Games World Wooden Bat Championship. Kazmir has wanted to be a baseball player since he was 4.
