| Taken with the Cubs' second-round draft pick in 2005 from Pima Community College in Arizona ... Had previously pitched for the University of Arizona in the Pac 10 before transferring ... Was 1-3 with a 3.18 ERA in 11 games between the Mesa Cubs of the Arizona Rookie League and Class Low A Boise in 2005 ... In 2006, Veal won 11 games in 28 starts between Class A Daytona and Class A Peoria ... went 6-2 with 1.67 ERA in 14 starts with Daytona following promotion from Peoria ... held opposing hitters to a .175 average against all season (the lowest mark of any full-season Cubs minor league starting pitcher) ... was named the Cubs 2006 Minor League Player of the Year along with LHP Rich Hill ... finished 2007 8-10 with a 4.97 ERA in 130 1/3 innings in his first year at Double-A ... tied for the Cubs' farm system lead in strikeouts with 131 in 28 appearances including 27 starts. |
