Biddle named EL Pitcher of the Week

The Phillies have been cautious with lefty Jesse Biddle, but his recent success at the Double-A level might make them rethink that approach. The 21-year old garnered Eastern League honors for his two outings over the past week.

Reading Fightin Phils starting pitcher Jesse Biddle was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 22 through April 28th.

In two starts during that time period, Biddle allowed just two hits and zero earned runs while striking out 26 batters and walking five over 13 innings. He ended the week 1-0 with 26 strikeouts, a 0.00 ERA and a .050 (2-for-40) opponents batting average.

On April 22, Biddle made waves across baseball when he struck out 16 batters over seven shutout innings in a win at Harrisburg. The 16 strikeouts is a modern day Reading franchise record, besting the 13 strikeouts put up by both Adam Walker (2001) and Randy Wolf (1999).

Biddle struck out the side in four of the seven innings he pitched against the Senators, including striking out the side in the first inning on just 12 pitches.

The Philadelphia native retired the first 19 batters he faced during the game, but saw his perfect game snapped after issuing a walk to the Senators' Sean Nicol and his no-hitter end after giving up a hit to Destin Hood in the seventh inning.

Biddle, who was ranked by Philly Baseball Insider as the top prospect in the Phillies organization, had another impressive outing Sunday against New Hampshire. Biddle struck out 10 batters and allowed just one hit in six innings of work. After issuing three walks through the first three innings, Biddle retired the final 12 batters he faced before leaving at the end of the sixth inning.

The 21-year old currently leads the Eastern League in strikeouts (40) and batting average against (.114). Biddle also ranks among the Easter League leaders in WHIP (0.77-2nd), innings pitched (31.0-3rd), and ERA (1.74-4th).
