'Cutters Well Represented For All-Star Game

The New York-Penn League All-Star Game is set for Tuesday August 17. Four players from the Williamsport CrossCutters have made the squad for the National League team.

The rosters for the New York-Penn League All-Star Game have been released for both the American and National League squads, who will face off on Tuesday, August 17 at Richmond County Ballpark in Staten Island, NY.

Four Williamsport Crosscutters were named to the NL All-Stars; Outfielder Miguel Alvarez, second baseman Cesar Hernandez and pitchers Chase Johnson and Eric Pettis.

Alvarez, signed as a free agent in 2007, is currently 3rd in the league with a .333 average and ranks 7th in hits (55), 6th in runs scored (30) and 3rd in doubles (15). In 2009, he hit .260 for the GCL Phillies.

Hernandez, signed as a free agent in 2006, is 8th in the loop with a .323 average and ranks 2nd in hits (62), and 2nd in stolen bases (21). With the GCL Phillies in 2009, he hit .267.

Pettis, a 35th round draft pick in 2010 out of UC Irvine, leads the league in wins (7), ERA (1.41) and ranks 3rd in strikeouts (46). He has issued just 3 walks in 44.2 innings of work. After starting the season in the Cutters starting rotation, Pettis was moved to the bullpen after five starts in an effort to limit the number of innings on his arm. Collegiately, he ranked 2nd in the nation in innings pitched in 2010. Since his move to the bullpen, Pettis has compiled 4 saves.

Johnson, a 21st round pick in the 2009 draft, leads the NY-PL with 12 saves. He has appeared in a total of 18 games and has an ERA of 2.21. In 2009 with the GCL Phillies, Johnson was 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA with 1 save.

The Brooklyn Cyclones lead the National League with eight All-Stars. First baseman Jeff Flagg, third baseman Joe Bonfe, shortstop Rylan Sandoval and outfielders Darrell Ceciliani and Cory Vaughn will join pitchers Angel Cuan, Yohan Almonte, and Ryan Fraser in representing the Mets' affiliate on the NL All-Star squad. Cyclones manager Wally Backman and his coaching staff will also be at the helm of the National League in the All-Star Game.

Connecticut, Hudson Valley and Staten Island each have five representatives on the American League squad which will be led by SI Yanks manager Josh Paul and his coaching staff.
